5 Benefits of FUE for Hair Restoration

Hair loss can be a deeply personal issue, affecting your self-image, self-confidence, and self-esteem. If this is happening to you, don’t hesitate; reach out to experts who can help you get your hair back with a safe, effective hair transplant solution.

SLENT has several locations, in Slidell, Hammond, and Mandeville, Louisiana, and our otolaryngology specialists are also experts in hair restoration. One of the most advanced and effective methods is FUE, which stands for follicular unit extraction, and can allow rapid hair transplant without removing an entire strip of skin from your scalp.

The FUE difference

For many years, hair restoration specialists depended on the follicular unit strip surgery (FUSS) method. This hair restoration procedure is based on removing an entire strip of hair, with the top layers of skin from the scalp intact, from the back of your head.

Once the strip is removed, the area is treated for healing, and the strip is divided into the individual follicles for transplantation into different parts of the scalp. The main objection to this type of follicle harvesting is that it leaves an unsightly bald strip at the back of your head.

In contrast, FUE takes out follicles individually with a closed harvesting system that acts like a tiny punch, readying the follicles for transplantation in a single effortless move.

The follicle can then be transplanted to the desired area of the head. The process can be repeated as many times as needed, with follicles being harvested from various points across the scalp instead of in a large continuous strip.

5 benefits of FUE

Benefits of using the FUE method include:

1. Reduced treatment time

Since there’s no need to separate follicles with forceps, a session doesn’t take as long, and many follicles can be transplanted quickly one after the other. An FUE hair transplant only takes about 5-6 hours and can be split into shorter sessions, if desired.

2. Less visible harvesting

Because the hair can be taken from the thickest areas of your scalp and from multiple points instead of a long strip, we only shave a small portion of the thickest part of your scalp hair. Then, instead of removing skin, we remove follicles across the area so you don’t have a big stripe of follicles all gone at once.

3. Minimal pain during treatment

Since your scalp is simply having individual follicles removed instead of a long strip of scalp skin peeled away, pain associated with hair transplantation using FUE is minimal. You’ll feel tiny pricks as we harvest follicles, but they’re spaced out.

4. Faster recovery

Small puncture wounds heal faster than incisions, so you can go right back to your normal routine pretty quickly. Just be gentle with your scalp, avoid vigorous exercise, and don't completely immerse your head in water for about a week after FUE.

5. Superior results

With FUE, the healthy follicles are handled less before being implanted than with FUSS. We make sure each of the donor grafts are stored and monitored for temperature and moisture levels during the harvesting process, so they have a higher chance of implanting successfully when we place them back into your scalp.
