Got Thinning Hair? Here Are 5 Treatment Options to Turn it Around
Hair loss isn’t just about the physical thinning of hair and exposure of the scalp. It can also have serious psychological downsides for both men and women. If you’re starting to see evidence of thinning hair, you’re probably wondering what you can do about it.
At SLENT, with offices in Slidell, Hammond, and Mandeville, Louisiana, our team of medical experts provides multiple hair restoration services to help you regain your hair and your confidence.
Causes of hair loss
There are several common reasons for hair loss. One of the best known is androgenic alopecia, also known as “pattern baldness,” which can happen to men or women. The hallmark of this type of hair loss is thinning that starts at the temples and works its way back on each side.
Medications can also cause hair thinning (a common example is cancer treatments such as chemotherapy). So can hormonal changes such as pregnancy, menopause, or dropping testosterone levels.
Fortunately, there are many therapies for hair loss, ranging from topical or oral medications to surgical intervention.
5 common treatments for hair loss
At SLENT, we offer multiple popular options for hair loss.
1. Finasteride
Finasteride is an oral medication that bollocks production of a hormone in the scalp that inhibits hair growth. It’s a common treatment for men who suffer from both hair thinning and prostate issues.
2. Scalp micropigmentation (SMP)
SMP involves tattooing tiny dots on the scalp with a pigment the same color as your hair. This method can yield results that last up to eight years and gives the appearance of thicker hair. If you have small areas where your scalp shows through your hair, this could be a good option for you.
3. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy
PRP can be used effectively on your scalp to encourage inactive or damaged follicles to regrow new hairs. PRP can also thicken the hair shaft for stronger individual hairs. You can choose to combine PRP with other treatments like microneedling for optimized results.
4. Low-level laser therapy (LLLT)
LLLT stimulates hair follicles with gentle laser light pulses to reactivate follicles and keep them in the growth (anagen) phase for longer, generating faster hair growth. This option is common among former chemotherapy patients.
5. Follicular unit extraction (FUE)
FUE hair transplantation involves harvesting healthy hair follicles and transplanting them to areas of the scalp with thinning hair or baldness. It can take about six months for the thousand or so follicles to re-enter the hair growth phase and start producing new hairs.
